Cohabitation: How To Best Protect Your Assets

Couples who are planning on living together should think long and hard about having a cohabitation agreement drawn up. This is a simple, yet very effective way to protect ones interests. It will also lay out the couple’s living arrangements so that there is no doubt who is responsible for what. Often times, people who are in love decide to move in together without giving things much thought. They assume that their warm feelings for each other will be enough to work through any issues that they may have. Unfortunately, things rarely work out this way. Problems begin to arise and before you know it, the couples split.

If a couple would have sit down and hammer some things out before moving in together, they have a better chance of making things work when things get tough. Every couple will have problems. Finding a way to work out as many of them as possible, before they get out of control, is wise and is exactly what a cohabitation agreement can do.

Another reason to consider such a binding agreement is to protect each person’s assets. Individuals aren’t likely to have many problems leaving with the things that they came into the shared home or apartment with. There may, however, be issues concerning who gets those assets the couple purchased jointly. Figuring out how these things will be divided if the couple breaks up is a good way to avoid arguments, fights and even violence later.

No couple, regardless of how long they have been together, should fail to protect themselves in the event that the relationship fails. It is naïve to think that there won’t be any problems. The best way to deal with problems, however, is to head them off as much as possible or to make them easy to solve. It will be much easier and a lot less painful to figure out how to divvy up assets or who will be paying what bills, before a couple has to deal with these things. Once things have deteriorated, it is often difficult to talk things out and come to conclusions which are fair and which benefit the other person.
