College Textbook Savings For Students

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Every year students flock to the college bookstore to purchase the various textbooks that they require for their classes. Little do these students realize that, in doing so, they are throwing good money away. As unbelievable as it may seem textbooks, in some cases, actually cost as much, if not more, than tuition.bookstack_full

On the surface the college bookstore may seem like a convenient source for textbooks. Titles are usually in-stock and students may purchase new textbooks or opt for the cheaper alternative of used books. In truth the money saved by purchasing used textbooks from the college bookstore is only a fraction of the amount that students could be saving if they shopped online.

More and more online booksellers have begun selling textbooks at a considerable discount off of the cover price. In fact, many major booksellers now have special areas of their web sites that are devoted to selling nothing but textbooks. Online used bookstores are another source for college books as they stock a large number of textbooks, which means sizable savings for students. There are also web-based retailers whose inventory is entirely devoted to college books.

Students who elect to buy online will no longer be able to resell their books to the college bookstore at the end of class, but that doesn’t mean that they are stuck with the textbooks. Many web sites that sell textbooks also offer students the option of selling their books to fellow bargain-seekers. This allows students to easily recouping a portion of their money.

How to help your child to be successful in Mathematics

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Here are some things that you can do to help your child be a successful mathematics student:

Visit your child’s school. Meet with your child’s teacher and ask how your child approaches mathematics. Does your child enjoy it? Does your child participate actively? Does your child understand assignments and do them accurately? If the teacher indicates that your child has problems with math, ask for specific things that you can do to help your child.edu1

Check math homework and other assignments. It’s usually a good idea to check to see that your younger child has finished his/her math homework assignments. If your older child is having trouble finishing assignments, check his/her work, too. After your child’s teacher returns math homework, have your child bring it home so that you can read the comments to see if he/she has done the assignment satisfactorily. However, do not do homework for your child! Limit your assistance to seeing that your child understands the assignments and that your child has the necessary supplies to do them. Too much parent involvement in homework can make children dependent - and takes away from the value of homework as a way for children to become independent and responsible.

Find out whether your child’s teacher is highly qualified and whether the school follows state standards for mathematics instruction. Ask the school principal for a school handbook or math curriculum guide. If your school doesn’t have a handbook, ask the principal and teachers questions such as the following:

• What math teaching methods and materials are used? Are the methods used to teach math based on scientific evidence about what works best? Are materials up to date?
• How much time is spent on math instruction?
• How does the school measure student progress in math? What tests does it use? How do the students at the school score on state assessments of math?
• Does the school follow state math standards and guidelines?
• Are the math teachers highly qualified? Do they meet state certification and subject-area knowledge requirements?
